Οσιος Δαβίδ Ανω Πόλη Θεσσαλονίκη

Saint David

The mosaic representation of the vision of Ezekiel (Theophany) depicting Christ seated and without a mustache dominates in the interior of the church. According to legend, the temple was built by crypto-Christian Theodora, daughter of Emperor Galerius. However, historical sources place it in the 5th century. Between the 12th and the 14th century, the main church was adorned with new frescoes, which are the only ones in Thessaloniki dating from the Comnenian period. St David is believed to have become a mosque in the 16th century -in fact, a part of the minaret to the left of the entrance still survives.
